PROGRAM: RISE OF THE INTERNATIONAL GREEN CONSTRUCTION CODE

WILL LEED BE RELEVANT?

It's been approaching for several years. Lurking in the murky shadows in the sea of codes emanating from the International Code Council. Developed from a swell of demands for something "enforceable" for sustainable design and something that was developed like the codes which govern design and construction of buildings.

Well, it is here. The International Green Construction Code. The State of Maryland was the first to adopt it. What does it mean when to programs like LEED™ and Green Globes™? What does it mean when the voluntary becomes mandatory? What does it mean when the local mandate (like the Baltimore City Green Construction Code) goes national — or global?

Are the voluntary programs which catapulted sustainable design still relevant when the local building inspector is mandating water savings, energy reduction, minimum lighting efficacy, and other expectations greater that the minimum aspects of the other ICC Codes? Are the voluntary sustainable design programs relevant when desired goals are now mandatory?

Stuart Kaplow, an attorney whose practice involves sustainable design, presents a program on LEED and its relevancy in the face of the IgCC.

This month’s sponsors are Marc Held with Malta Windows and Leonard Fetchko with CARPATHOS, LLC.
